Following the switching off of analogue television (TV) services, the existing digital terrestrial television (DTT) frequency channels operating in the 614 – 806 MHz band (600/700 MHz bands) will be migrated to the 470 – 614 MHz band (500 MHz band) (Channel Migration) in order to vacate the 600/700 MHz bands for the provision of high value-added mobile telecommunications services.

New Transmitting Frequencies to be Used
With effect from 1 April 2021, the following new DTT frequency channels will be used for broadcast transmission -
  • RTHK TV 31, RTHK TV 32 and RTHK TV 33 will use UHF Channel 27 (i.e. 518 – 526 MHz)
  • Jade 81, ViuTVsix 96 and ViuTV 99 will use UHF Channel 37 (i.e. 598 – 606 MHz)

Arrangements for the Channel Migration
  • The six digital TV programme channels will be transmitted on both the existing and new frequencies from 1 April 2021 to 30 November 2021 (Digital Simulcast).
  • From 1 December 2021 00:00 onwards, these digital TV programme channels will only be transmitted on the new frequencies (i.e. UHF Channels 27 and 37).
  • The transmitting frequencies of other digital TV programme channels will not be affected.
  • Numbers of all digital TV programme channels (i.e. 31, 32, 33, 76, 77, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 96 and 99) will remain unchanged.

How to Continue to Receive these Six Digital TV Programme Channels?

If you are Building Management Offices / Incorporated Owners (BMOs/IOs) or other Property Managers
BMOs / IOs or other property managers should engage contractors of their common antenna broadcast distribution (CABD) systems / in-building coaxial cable distribution systems (IBCCDS) to reconfigure the systems from 1 April to 30 November 2021 for receiving and distributing the TV signals transmitted on the new DTT frequencies. image 7

Consistent with the arrangements adopted in the past similar exercises, owners of CABD systems / IBCCDS would need to bear the relevant cost.

Depending on the design of individual CABD systems / IBCCDS, you may need to inform residents / users to rescan the digital TV programme channels on their TV sets / DTT receivers after the completion of the system reconfiguration.

If you are living in Private Residential Estates / Buildings / Housing Courts of Various Subsidized Home Ownership Schemes
Residents of private residential estates, buildings, housing courts of various subsidized home ownership schemes, etc. installed with common antenna broadcast distribution (CABD) systems / in-building coaxial cable distribution systems (IBCCDS) should check with your building management office on the progress of CABD system / IBCCDS reconfiguration. You should follow the instructions given by the building management office whether and when you would need to rescan the digital TV programme channels on your TV sets / DTT receivers.
If you are living in Public Housing Estates
The Housing Authority or the Housing Society will be responsible for the common antenna broadcast distribution (CABD) systems / in-building coaxial cable distribution systems (IBCCDS) reconfiguration work. You should check with your building management office on the progress of CABD system / IBCCDS reconfiguration. You should follow the instructions given by the building management office whether and when you would need to rescan the digital TV programme channels on your TV sets / DTT receivers.
If you are living in Village Houses / Bungalows / Old Tenement Buildings
Residents of village houses, bungalows, old tenement buildings, etc. are usually using self-provided TV antennae for TV reception. In that case, if you cannot receive any of the six digital TV programme channels on your TV set / DTT receiver on or after 1 December 2021, you will just need to rescan the digital TV programme channels.
